Ось уже багато років у нашій Українській  громаді м. Сиракюз існує та продовжує свою роботу і навчання Школа Українознавства ім. Л.Українки. Цей довготривалий період позначений наполегливою працею батьків та вчителів у вихованні дітей та молоді на культурних та духовних надбаннях укр. народу. Школою опікується її спонсор – Батьківський Комітет, який репрезентує батьків дітей школи. На теперішній час головою якого є пані Марта Войтович. Батьківський Комітет дбає про фінансове забезпечення школи, шкільну бібліотеку, зорові навчальні матеріали, фінансує виступи, дбає про чергування під час навчання в школі.

Директором школи Українознавства в Сиракюзах є п. Світлана Біггс, яка відповідає за адміністративний та навчальний напрямок школи, представляє учительський склад, співпрацює з головою Батьківського Комітету, відповідає за проведення кінцевих іспитів, бере участь на нарадах Шкільної Ради.

Наша школа має добрий вчительський колектив, де працюють учителі з вищою педагогічною освітою з України, або здобули вищу освіту тут, у США, та саме головне, що всі вони мають талант вчителя і стараються бути хорошими педагогами і методистами. Вчителі прикладають багато праці для поглиблених знань учнів, їх виховання і навчання, працюючи за програмою Шкільної Ради, річним планом та поурочною програмою. Завданням нашої школи є не тільки навчити української мови, а на прикладах нашої історії, літератури і культури виховувати наших дітей бути морально чистими, стійкими і завжди любити наш рідний край, нашу славну Україну. 

Рідна школа також пишається своїми випускниками, які успішно здають кінцеві іспити і надалі продовжують своє навчання у середніх та вищих навчальних закладах Америки. Тому нашою теперішньою метою є не лише втримати школу Українознавства, але і поповнювати її новими учнями, бо саме вона є берегиня живого духу України в кожному поколінні, всюди і в усьому.

Щороку школа Українознавства проводить Різдвяні свята та прихід святого Миколая, де діти мають можливість насолоджуватися укр. різдвяними колядами, вертепами, підготовляє концерти до вшанування памяті кобзаря – Т.Г.Шевченка. Також беремо участь і у громадських міроприємствах, виступаємо на Українському фестивалі, підготовлюємо цікаві концерти: “ Таланти твої Україно”, де учні дійсно демонструють кваліфіковану гру на різних інструментах, спів і декламування віршів.

School of Ukrainian Studies

The Lesia Ukrainka School of Ukrainian Studies has been an integral part of our Ukrainian community  in Syracuse for many years.  This long period has been marked by the hard work of parents and teachers in the education of children and youth in the cultural and spiritual heritage of Ukrainian people. The school receives support from its sponsor, the Parents’ Committee, which represents the parents of children of the school, and is presently chaired by Dr. Martha Wojtowycz. The Parents’ Committee cares about the financial stability of the school, the school library, the educational materials, and the financing of performances. Parents take turns serving as hall monitors while school is in session.

The Director of the Ukrainian School in Syracuse is Mrs. Svitlana Biggs, who is responsible for administration and the academic direction of the school. She presents the required curriculum to the teachers, works with the head of the Parents' Committee, is responsible for conducting final exams, and participates in meetings of the School Council.

Our school has an excellent teaching team, staffed by individuals with higher level formal training in education, either in Ukraine or here in the United States. Most importantly, they arevall talented teachers, who present the materials using innovative methods, and participate in the development and education of the students. Our teachers dedicate their time in developing a curriculum that meets the requirements of the National School Board, and prepare annual work plans and individual lesson plans. The goals of our school are not only to teach the Ukrainian language, history, literature, and culture, but also to instill positive morals and values, and love for our native land, our glorious Ukraine. 

Each year the School of Ukrainian Studies celebrates Christmas holidays and the arrival of St. Nicholas, with a pageant, where children perform and enjoy Ukrainian Christmas carols and the Nativity scene. The school also prepares a concert to honor memory of our “kobzar”, Taras Shevchenko, takes part in community activities, such as Ukrainian festivals, and plans "Your talents Ukraine", where students actually demonstrate their skills on musical instruments, singing and reciting poems.

The School of Ukrainian Studies is proud of its graduates who successfully pass their final examinations and further continue their studies in secondary and higher educational institutions in the United States. Therefore, our current goal is to not only to have the School of Ukrainian Studies, but also to continually replenish it with new students because it is the keeper of the living spirit of Ukraine in every generation, everywhere and in everything.
